After School Arts ProgramASAP, After School Arts Program, offers unique learning opportunities for at-risk 3rd-5th grade students in Des Moines, Iowa, public schools. The program allows students who have demonstrated artistic interests and talent to connect directly with teaching artists in a variety of hands-on classroom studios, providing them opportunities to grow their artistic abilities, social skills and self-esteem. With the assistance of artists from the local community, ASAP offers studios ranging from ceramics, painting, and photography to West African drumming, Brazilian Capoeira, and dance. The After School Arts Program currently partners with King and Moulton elementary schools in Des Moines. Our work is supported by a variety of local sponsors, artists who offer their time and talents as instructors, and dozens of volunteers who share their time to ensure a safe and productive experience for the students. We appreciate your interest in the program, and hope you'll take a few minutes to learn more about ASAP, our efforts to grow and expand the program locally, and how you can help us ensure a brighter future for at-risk children in the Des Moines area. " One only has to look at the faces of the children when they are working, or watch their behavior when presenting their projects to their parents to see the difference this [program] is making today. One can only shudder to think of the cost to our collective futures if tomorrow’s George Washington Carver, Muhammed Ali, or Barack Obama is not given the opportunity to find success in formative years aligned to the gifts and strengths for which they are destined.
