ASAP Features Special Global Arts Session

The Winter 2014 session of ASAP is a special Global Arts-themed session, giving students a taste of arts from around the world.

The session is organized in partnership with CULTUREALL and is funded in part with a grant from the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

One hundred ten students attend the Global Arts session for seven weeks, working in one of the following studios:

Brazilian Capoeira, with teaching artists Holly Sells and Julio Arruda Dos Santos

English Handbells, with Beth Ann Edwards

Indian Cookery, with teaching artist Ritu Varma

Japanese Chigiri-e, with Yuki Shozaki

Life and Art in Russia, with Masha Napolitano

Philippine Tinikling, with Yolanda Duerson

Spinning and Weaving Around the World, with Cindy Griese

Storytelling with Zakery’s Bridge, with author and teacher Kay Fenton Smith

Opening activities this session include close study and discussion of well-known Indian and Japanese works of art.

Additional support for the Global Arts session comes from a 21st Century Learning Centers Grant through Des Moines Public Schools, Bravo Greater Des Moines, Principal Financial Group, and St. John’s Lutheran Church.
